Jens Johansen c56e94630e [vm] Allow Before/After GC to signal perf
This CL makes it possible for the Dart VM to start or stop `perf` while
doing GC, which gives a significantly more stable output.

Example usage:

Bash script that creates the correct file handles and calls dart under
`perf stat` based on the arguments given to the script:

```
DART=$1
shift
AOTSNAPSHOT=$1
shift
ctl_dir=/tmp/
ctl_fifo=${ctl_dir}perf_ctl.fifo
test -p ${ctl_fifo} && unlink ${ctl_fifo}
mkfifo ${ctl_fifo}
exec {ctl_fd}<>${ctl_fifo}
ctl_ack_fifo=${ctl_dir}perf_ctl_ack.fifo
test -p ${ctl_ack_fifo} && unlink ${ctl_ack_fifo}
mkfifo ${ctl_ack_fifo}
exec {ctl_fd_ack}<>${ctl_ack_fifo}
perf_ctl_fd=$ctl_fd perf_ctl_fd_ack=$ctl_fd_ack perf stat --delay=-1 --control fd:${ctl_fd},${ctl_fd_ack} -B -e "task-clock:u,context-switches:u,cpu-migrations:u,page-faults:u,cycles:u,instructions:u,branch-misses:u" $DART --perf_ctl_fd=${ctl_fd} --perf_ctl_fd_ack=${ctl_fd_ack} --perf_ctl_usage=1 --deterministic $AOTSNAPSHOT $@
exec {ctl_fd_ack}>&-
unlink ${ctl_ack_fifo}
exec {ctl_fd}>&-
unlink ${ctl_fifo}
```

This will start `perf stat` paused (which would require the run dart
aot-compiled script to start it when it wants to) and where the VM
pauses `perf` while doing GC.

In practise, looking at instruction counts reported by `perf stat`, I've
seen the difference between runs go from 2+ mio (and in some instances
23+ mio) to around 30,000 (!) on runs of the analyzer (tool
"stable_analysis").

Liam Appelbe 1a39e3530f [vm] Enable branch coverage by default
Currently if you want branch coverage you have to pass
`--branch-coverage` to both the VM and the coverage collection tool.

This has led to an issue in Flutter where the flag isn't being passed
to the VM, so the branch coverage data is incomplete. It will also
mean that if we add branch coverage support to `package:test`, the
command will have to look like:
`dart --branch-coverage test --branch-coverage ...`

The overhead of the branch coverage instructions is minimal, since
`RecordCoverage` instructions are only inserted in JIT mode anyway. So
it would be better to just enable this flag by default in the VM.

Tess Strickland cb9ecbc363 [vm] Enforce that entry points must be annotated by default.
Changes the default value of the --verify-entry-points flag
to true.

Changes the default value for the check_is_entrypoint argument to
to the Invoke/InvokeGetter/InvokeSetter flags to true. The mirrors
library implementation and calls via vm-service explicitly pass
false for this argument now.

Add annotations as needed, such as annotating classes with
annotated generative constructors. In some cases, the annotations
were more general than needed (e.g., annotating with a no-argument
entry point annotation when only the setter is needed), so make
those annotations more specific.

As this pattern is already common in downstream code, allow

Daco Harkes 6378a26212 [vm] Variable scoping fixes
This CL fixes two bugs related to scoping:
1. Empty variable name lookup in outer functions failing.
2. Let expressions not pushing and popping contexts.

Additionally, this CL introduces a `--print-scoping` debug flag to
ease debugging scoping issues in the future.

Variable lookup is now only using kernel offset, unless the offset
is `kNoKernelOffset`. In that case, the names are used.
All synthetic variables in the VM now use `kNoKernelOffset` as their
offset.

The let expressions not pushing contexts is fixed by pushing context.
The context is only pushed if the scope captures variables. So this
should not lead to performance regressions. (Any lacking pushing of
scopes should have lead to crashes.)

Tess Strickland d06d627c79 [vm] Remove --[no-]lazy-dispatchers flag.
No client of the VM uses this flag, only tests, and this flag was always
set to false in AOT mode. Thus, remove uses of this flag and instead
always lazily create dispatchers as needed when resolving method names
in JIT mode.

Remove the implicit value of `allow_add` for some Resolver
static methods. For callers that previously depended on the implicit
`true` value (which includes the AOT precompilier), pass `true` for
uses in the compiler and pass `!FLAG_precompiled_mode` for uses in the
runtime. Assert that `allow_add` is false when these methods are invoked
from the precompiled runtime.

Remove Resolver static methods that are no longer used.

At the beginning of a major GC cycle, select some mostly-empty pages to be evacuated. Mark the pages and the objects on these pages. Apply a write barrier for stores creating old -> evacuation candidate pointers, and discover any such pointers that already exist during marking.

At the end of a major GC cycle, evacuate objects from these pages. Forward pointers of objects in the remembered set and new-space. Free the evacuated pages.

This compaction is incremental in the sense that creating the remembered set is interleaved with mutator execution. The evacuation step, however, is stop-the-world.

Write-barrier elimination for x.slot = x is removed. Write-barrier elimination for x.slot = constant is removed in the JIT, kept for AOT but snapshot pages are marked as never-evacuate.

Alexander Markov 2ee6fcf514 [vm] Remove TypeRef
TypeRef type wraps around another type and it was used to represent
a graph of recursive types. After [0], the only use of TypeRef is
for TypeParameter.bound which may indirectly reference the same
TypeParameter.

This change replaces TypeParameter.bound with TypeParameter.owner and
removes TypeRef entirely. Various parts of the VM no longer need to
handle and support TypeRefs.

TypeParameter.owner can reference a FunctionType, Class,
or, as an optimization, it can be set to null in order to share
class type parameters among different classes.

With the exception of the 'TypeParameter.owner' back pointer,
VM types are now not recursive and can be visited without
additional tracking.

Caveats:

* Generic FunctionType cannot be cloned in a shallow way:
  when copying a FunctionType, type parameters should be cloned too
  and their owners should be updated. For that reason,
  a mapping between 'from' and 'to' function types
  (FunctionTypeMapping) is maintained during type transformations
  such as InstantiateFrom.
  FunctionType::Clone is used instead of Object::Clone where
  appropriate.

* When testing types for subtyping and equivalence, mapping
  between function types is passed to make sure
  type parameters belong to the equivalent function types.

* IL serializer needs to serialize function types as a whole before
  serializing any types potentially pointing into the middle of a
  function type (such as return type 'List<Y0>' pointing into
  the middle of a function type 'List<Y0> Function<Y0>()').

flag. We also have a CI builder that uses this flag for all tests.

This is an issue for cases where `kernel-isolate` is not AppJIT'ed,
which is the case for simulators and ia32. Especially in debug builds
this causes a very-very slow time-to main due to JIT'ing the CFE code in
`kernel-isolate` and running flow graph checker etc (in debug mode).

This causes various tests to sporadically hit the timeout limit, become
flaky and require gardening attention.

As workarounds: the actual threshold was modified in tests, status files
were updated to mark tests as Pass,Slow etc.

=> This Cl will make `kernel-isolate` no longer be affected by the
   `--optimization-counter-threshold`
=> This should make the cycle times faster on those modes and avoid
   flaky timeouts that gardeners constantly have to pay attention to.

Tess Strickland 823934f1c5 Reland "[vm/compiler] Add symbols for read-only data when requested."
This is a reland of commit 286326f834

Checking into https://github.com/flutter/flutter/issues/108378, it
looks like the stripped snapshot indeed is unchanged, but the .ipa
being benchmarked includes .dSYMs, which is why there was a size
regression in adding this extra debugging information.

If that changes, we can remove the flag, but for now, I've added the
flag back so these symbols are not added by default.
