Liam Appelbe 4679c040c6 [vm] Sync ffi callbacks can enter owned target isolate
Adds a new code path for NativeCallable.isolateLocal invocations. If
the current thread is not entered into any isolate, but owns the
target isolate, then it enters the target isolate, invokes, then exits
the isolate.

Liam Appelbe 919d50344a [vm] Fix deadlock in NativeCallable.listener
Switch all lockers of FfiCallbackMetadata::lock_ in FfiCallbackMetadata
from MutexLocker to SafepointMutexLocker.

The new test deadlocks on patchset 2, before the fix:
https://logs.chromium.org/logs/dart/buildbucket/cr-buildbucket/8706690957454603105/+/u/test_results/new_test_failures__logs_

And succeeds on patchset 4, after the fix.

I found that switching the MutexLocker in DLRT_GetFfiCallbackMetadata to
a SafepointMutexLocker caused other NativeCallable.listener tests to
fail, so I've left that one unchanged:

Chloe Stefantsova 1f26ddfee2 [ffi] Account for position variance in converting native types
This CL introduces variance-dependent treatment of the `Handle` native
type when converting native types to Dart types. Since `Handle` can
represent any object, it should match any type. To achive that in
cases when `Handle` appears as the subtype in the subtype checks, it's
converted to `Never` in covariant positions and to `Object?` in
covariant ones.

Before this change, an error reaching an FFI callback would attempt to execute the normal invocation stub from the beginning in the FFI callback's frame, which quickly crashes. After this change, the runtime recognizes this marker use of the invocation stub and returns to the FFI callback function instead.

Martin Kustermann 23cac7c840 [gardening] Make more robust test for mutator bit stealing mechanism
We also disable the test in hotreload mode, because threads that are
stuck in ffi calls don't participate in hot-reload requests.

This is something we may want to look into. Right now it's conservative in
the sense that if an embedder did a `Dart_LookupClass()` in such a ffi call
and then a reload happened, such a handle would possibly hold pointer to
an old class object and weird things may happen.

This fixes test failures in hot reload / rollback mode of

  `vm/dart/isolates/many_isolates_blocked_at_ffi_test`

and also make it more robust.

Gabriel Terwesten 5c1796f4e0 [vm,ffi] Avoid linking test DLLs to dart.exe
The `ffi_test_functions` shared library needs to access functions from
`dart_api.h` and `dart_native_api.h`, which are only available in
the Dart executable.

UNIX shared libraries can have undefined symbols, which are resolved at
runtime and can be found in the loading executable. Windows DLLs cannot
have undefined symbols, but they can be dynamically linked to an
executable (in this case `dart.exe`). This requires the DLL to be able
to find the executable at runtime.

A better solution is to include implementations for the Dart APIs in the
DLL itself, that use `GetModuleHandle(NULL)` to get a handle to the
executable and `GetProcAddress` to get the address of the function.

This is what `dart_api_win.c` does.

Adds a new `@Array.variable()` to specify that the last element of

This CL does not add any checks for passing structs with variable
length inline arrays by value or directly calling them with
`AllocatorAlloc.call`. Instead, the implementation defaults to what
C does, allocate as if there are 0 elements in the variable length
inline array.

Daco Harkes f36c714575 [test/ffi] Test generator pointer arguments
This CL extends the test generator to support struct pointers. For
callbacks, only synchronous use of pointers is supported in tests.
(Ownership of memory is _not_ passed to Dart.) We have plenty of other
tests passing ownership. These tests are meant to check the ABIs, for
which sync calls and callbacks suffice.

Split off https://dart-review.googlesource.com/c/sdk/+/371960 to make
the changes in that CL only relate to variable length arrays. That CL
will pass pointers to structs with variable length arrays.

Daco Harkes 4b66657b98 [vm/ffi] address of operator for FFI leaf calls
During FFI leaf calls, the Dart GC will not run. This means that we
can pass pointers into `TypedData` to FFI calls that take `Pointer`
arguments.

After this CL, we have three types of arguments that can flow into
`Pointer` argument in an FFI call:
* `Pointer`.
* `TypedData`: Any typed data including views.
* `_Compound`: A TypedData/Pointer and an offset in bytes.

The is only possible for `@Native external` functions, `asFunction`
does not support passing in `TypedData`. (See related GitHub issues
for discussion. TLDR: FFIgen should generate bindings without config.)

`.address` expressions on `TypedData` and `Array` elements do _not_
introduce bounds checks, even though `TypedData` and `Array` have
bounds information. E.g. `ffiNative(Uint8List(10)[20].address)` does
not throw.

Implementation details:

The CFE analyzes call-sites to `@Native external` functions. If the
arguments are `.address` expressions, it transforms the call site to
pass the compound or `TypedData`. If an additional offset needs to be
applied, the CFE constructs a new `_Compound` with the correct offset
in bytes.

The CFE then also creates a new `@Native external` function which have
`TypedData`s and `_Compound`s parameters. To avoid name clashes, these
functions are postfixed with `#` and `P`, `T`, or `C` for each Pointer
parameter.

TEST=pkg/vm/testcases/transformations/ffi/address_of_*

In the VM, `TypedData` arguments are passed as tagged values, and the
address is loaded inside the `FfiCallInstr`. `_Compound` arguments
turn into two IL definitions, one for the `TypedDataBase` (tagged),
and one for the offset in bytes (unboxed). The address is then loaded
inside the `FfiCallInstr` and the offset in bytes is applied.

Adding the offset in bytes required an extra temp register for ia32.
Also, it uncovered that the temp register in arm32 was conflicting
with the argument registers. However, TMP should suffice instead.

Daco Harkes f98a2138b7 [vm] Run clang-format on code base
When uploading CLs, the presubmit checks verify that the lines in the
diff are formatted correctly according to `git cl format runtime`.

However, when `buildtools/<os>-<arch>/clang/bin/clang-format` is
updated, it does not force reformatting of files that would be
reformatted.

This leads to two issues:
* Inconsistent style within the code base and within a single file.
* Spurious reformatting in CLs when (1) clang-format is used on the
whole file, or (2) the diff lines overlap.

`clang-format` doesn't change that frequently, so in general this is
not a large issue, but I've seen a bit too many "spurious formatting,
please revert" comments on CLs recently.

This CL formats the runtime to be in line with the current pinned
`clang-format`:

```
$ find runtime/ -iname *.h -o -iname *.cc | xargs buildtools/mac-arm64/clang/bin/clang-format -i
```

`git cl format` (which only formats changed lines, and does so with
`clang-format`) seems to not agree with itself, or clang-format, or
cpplint in a handful of places. This CL adds `// clang-format off`
for these. (See previous patchsets for the specific instances.)

Liam Appelbe dff831dbfc [ffi] Fix callback subtyping test
Previously we were reusing the ensureNativeTypeToDartType function to
check that Dart function passed as a callback matches the native type.
This works if the types exactly match, but the subtyping test is
backwards, so it doesn't allow certain cases that should be allowed. The
main case is that when the native function type returns void, the Dart
function should be allowed to return anything.

So I added ensureDartTypeToNativeType, which reverses the subtype test.

As well as making the return types more permissive, this has also
changed what parameters are allowed to be passed to callbacks. For
example, in tests/ffi/vmspecific_static_checks_typeddata_test.dart:80,
passing a Handle to a function expecting an Int8List used to work, but
is now a compile error. I think this change is an improvement, because
previously it would have been possible to pass any type of object to
that callback. So this change turns some potential runtime type errors
into compile errors. But technically I think this is a breaking change.

Simon Binder f2329a703f [vm/ffi] Fix field tests on Windows
Fields used in Dart test with `@Native` fields must be `extern "C"` to
avoid name mangling.
As seen from build and test failures, MSVC doesn't seem to consistently
use C fields for `extern "C"` fields defined in a C++ file.
By moving these fields into a C file, they can be referenced both from
the other C++ test functions and via Dart fields.

Allow annotating top-level or static fields with `@Native` to create
fields backed by native memory.
By using the `_addressOf` operator implemented in the VM, these fields
can be implemented in the CFE by replacing them with accessors looking
up the pointer and then using existing methods to load and store the
value.

Daco Harkes 40094c8cfd [vm/ffi] Unwrap typed data in FFI calls
Enables passing inner pointers to typed data in FFI leaf calls.

This works for typed data's in the Dart heap, external typed datas
(constructed from `Pointer.asTypedList`), and typed data views.

Notable implementation details:
1. The Dart signature is used in the Marshaller now. This means it
needs to keep track of whether there's a pointer argument in the
   signature (`asFunction`) or not (`@Native`).
2. Unwrapping is done in `FfiCallInstr::EmitNativeCode` before moving
the arguments to their native location. This ensures we can use
the assembler logic to load the `TypedDataBase::data` field.
3. The `XXXList` user visible classes don't have predefined cids.
So the implementation uses symbols for comparison.
4. The type checking logic takes `isLeaf` as input to reject typed
data. This leads to an error message about the type not accepted.
Alternatively, we could consider adding an error message that
specifically says the function should be leaf.
5. To cover all calling convention variants, tests are generated with
   up to 20 arguments.

Daco Harkes c6a85b81f4 [vm/ffi] Tests with Handles and constants
Adds tests to cover constant values flowing into `Handle` parameters
of `@Native external` functions.

The first test is a repro of the failure from
https://dart-review.googlesource.com/c/sdk/+/333840

The other tests construct more extreme cases.

Handles can't be passed to leaf functions, so no `isLeaf`.
